February 27-28, 2010
Saturday, February 27
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Saturday morning well visit the exhibition Sargent and the Sea, with Maria as your guide. This show, organized by the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, focuses on the early seascapes by John Singer Sargent. These early works show the impact of Impressionism on his developing bravura style in sparkling images of the seaside. After a group lunch, Saturday afternoon well return to the Museum of Fine Arts for a visit to Prendergast in Italy. This show, organized by the Williams College Museum of Art, will introduce you to the distinctive modernism of Maurice Prendergast and his fascination with Venice. His sparking, light-filled watercolors capture the atmosphere of Italy.
Sunday, February 28
Sunday morning we'll visit Spirits & Headhunters: Vanishing Worlds of the Amazon at the Museum of Natural Sciences. This show was organized by Associate Curator of Amazonia Adam Mekler, an expert on Amazonian material culture and a resident of Pasadena. In preparation for our visit to the museum, Adam has graciously invited us to his home for a private introduction to Amazonian art, and even promises to show us original works from his own collection. This meeting will be on a weekend day in early February in Pasadena.
Sunday afternoon Maria will lead our visit to the Menil Collection, including its superb collection of Surrealist art, the spectacular Dan Flavin installation, and the nearby Rothko Chapel.
The tuition of $600 for the weekend includes admission to all museums, all tours, lunch on Saturday, and the private lecture with Adam Mekler. Participants make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. The program will begin on Saturday at 10 AM and conclude on Sunday by 5 PM.
